February 28th, 2019 With Or Without

February 28th, 2019 With Or Without

Yesterday was another 5-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

How long will this take?

That's a question a lot of people ask when getting started.

I get it. I did too.

At over 500 pounds it was very easy for me to get discouraged about the answer to that question. I allowed my impatience to ruin many weight loss attempts because I wanted the results now and if we’re not getting what we want we get frustrated, and when we’re frustrated it makes it unnecessarily difficult to stay focused.

But what I’ve learned has proven to me that time doesn’t matter.

If you allow yourself to get discouraged about the task at hand and more specifically, the time it will take to accomplish your goal, the energy and focus needed for your action steps might be in the wrong place. My best advice?

Forget about time and just start making the changes. Start as small as you need. Ease into it. Above all, be consistent.

Before you know it you’ll have made amazing strides toward your goal in surprisingly little time.

Because guess what?

Time doesn’t care if you do this or not. Time will keep moving with or without you.

So how long is this going to take? As long as it needs.

Because, ideally, this isn’t something you’re doing for a couple of months. The changes in perspective and the action steps you're building into positive and supportive habits will be with you the rest of your life. These kinds of changes--these shifts, give us the best chance for a long life in maintenance at a healthy body weight. It's a daily practice. It's never perfect and it's never guaranteed, but it gives us the best chance.

So how do we forget about time and still get results in a timely manner?

One word: Consistency.

It’s consistency.

In the past, I would do well three days, followed by off plan for four. Pick it up on Monday and do well until Friday, then eat like a madman on the weekend. This inconsistency severely crippled my results and it seemed like it was taking forever to get anywhere.

If you would have asked how I was doing during one of those countless attempts, I would have replied “doing great, it’s a slow process, but I’m getting there.” It wasn’t until I became completely honest about the consistency issues that I was able to realize such dramatic results. Cheating myself became truly exhausting.

Forget about time, embrace your unique plan and be consistent in your efforts and you’ll enjoy the most amazing transformation of mind, body, and spirit--in hardly any time at all.

As you make your way, look for things that continually threaten consistency. Staying connected with those in the "same lifeboat" can have a dramatically positive effect. Good accountability and support go a long way. At the same time, developing ways to act instead of reacting to stress and emotions, is imperative to keeping a consistent embrace of your plan. And speaking of the plan-- making it reasonable is important. If it seems impossible to remain consistent, it isn't a failure, it's a learning opportunity--an opportunity to make adjustments and proceed. This is often the place where an honest personal evaluation might reveal addiction issues with certain foods/substances.

This thing we're doing is a process. But we must allow the process to process. I can think of several times when my impatience discarded the process--then, I'd beat myself up for another perceived failure. Be kind to you, please. You're not a failure. You're a student. Not of me and what I do or anyone else--no...you're a student studying you.

Once you find your YOU PLAN, the one you can embrace consistently, then you can really let time do it's thing while you do yours. Suddenly you'll feel a confident patience. And in that place, it's much easier to dream a little as you envision the life-changing positive consequences of your actions.

Thank you for reading and your continued support,
Practice, peace, and calm,
Sean

February 27th, 2019 Ice

February 27th, 2019 Ice

Yesterday was a 5-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Today's "ice event" closed schools all over our area. I had to get out the door rather quickly this morning. The ice will remain an issue for our area the rest of the day and evening.

I'm keeping this edition short. I'm taking a quick break for an update. Today's an exciting day because it's Day 1 of a brand new 8-week session of the support group teleconference support calls I facilitate. It's not too late for you to join us! If you want in on this session, send me an email right away: transformation.road@gmail.com and I'll answer whatever questions you might have and get you on the team!

I completed my morning foundation routine today, I enjoyed a late breakfast too--and I'm ready for a good rest of this Wednesday!

February 26th, 2019 Absolutely

February 26th, 2019 Absolutely

Yesterday was a 7-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I had a good elliptical workout, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Time management has been a constant challenge for me for as long as I can remember. What's interesting to me is how I can clearly see ways to manage time better--and still, I struggle with making those better choices. I can multitask like a champion when my back is against the wall, but really, that pattern creates unnecessary stress. This time management thing is certainly a work in progress.

I got everything I wanted to get done yesterday, done, so that was good.

After a short visit at mom's last night, I made my way to the RecPlex for an elliptical workout. The rush of endorphins after a solid session always feels amazing. When I'm feeling like that, I can see better paths and choices a little more clearly.

The questions I'm pulling from yesterday: In what ways can I reduce stress and anxiety by managing my time better? In what ways can I benefit the most from the post workout feel-good period? I think it's probably the best time to create new or modify existing action plans.

A daily practice, right? Absolutely.

February 25th, 2019 Very Common

February 25th, 2019 Very Common

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Kristin and I attended a play yesterday afternoon. Her niece had a great part in Freaky Friday The Musical and she was wonderful! Then, Mom and I watched the Oscars together last night. I picked up some chicken tacos--and we enjoyed the show, the visit, and dinner, right there in her room. After a couple of busy days and nights, it was a relaxing pace for a change.

Before I started losing weight in September 2008, I remember having some separation anxiety with food. So many times, this anxiety would serve as the catalyst for "one last binge" before I "really got serious" once and for all. My focus was clearly on what I would be giving up.

When I started back then, I decided to have a nothing is off limits approach, as long as I could fit it into my calorie budget. This approach helped curb the feeling of forced deprivation, but I still felt separated from the bigger portions.

In retrospect, it wasn't separation anxiety over any specific food, it was the perception of losing my coping mechanism; my drug, in the amounts I was accustomed. Eating to excess, sneak eating, binge eating, stress eating, emotional eating, eating for sport--all of it was a way of life. It's all I knew. I was really good at it, too.

I've communicated with a lot of people about this very topic and I discovered it's a very common thing to experience. What I quickly discovered was, my perception was faulty. My focus was driven by my addictive brain that felt its supply was threatened. Once I came out of the fog a little bit and I started losing enough to see and feel the difference, my perspective started to change.

Instead of focusing on what I had to give up, I started focusing on all of the wonderful things I could now enjoy along the way. All of these wonderful things, made possible by my decreasing size.

I remember them all. The first time I sat in a chair with arms without discomfort. It was actually at one of my daughter's school functions. Normally I would just stand or look for a folding chair without arms in the back of the auditorium, or not go altogether. I remember when the seat belt in my vehicle finally fit. I remember when the arms of a loved one could finally go all the way around me and actually touch! I remember the first time the doctor looked at me and said: "your numbers look great, keep doing what you're doing!" I remember enjoying an amusement park with my family for the first time since childhood, and even though I was scared of the big rides, I rode 'em all--simply because I could...fit. I remember the first time I had a foot race with my daughters. Yeah, they still won--but I was running like the wind blows.

I wasn't focusing on all of these positive things when I first started because I didn't know them. All I knew was, things would be very different at buffets, and that really bothered me.

At some point, with consistency and hard earned results, a shift is made. Suddenly it isn't about all of the things we're giving up, it's about all we're gaining.

And we still get to eat. We just don't get to abuse food to cover, comfort, buffer and smother us away from dealing with life. It's difficult. Life is hard sometimes, especially when you're morbidly obese. I noticed the emotional eating compounding issue at a very young age. I would eat to feel better and the resulting weight gain would leave me feeling worse, so I had to eat even more--because now it was a compounding problem. My coping mechanism was giving me even more reasons to use the coping mechanism.

The biggest challenge becomes learning to deal with things we avoided. This is where writing comes in very handy. Good therapy is another tool if you can get it. Once the shift in perspective is made, and we're no longer fretting or downright grieving over the perceived loss of food, that's when we can really start enjoying our transformation. That's when we start making it much more than just a physical one, it becomes a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual transformation.

What's really scary is, once these transformations start happening, it can all be surrendered if we lose our grip on the proper perspective. One of the most critically important things for me each day is the morning foundation routine. That mental/spiritual/emotional practice helps keep a comfortable grip.

February 24th, 2019 Carry On

February 24th, 2019 Carry On

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal by double, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I texted my intention to support friends, I mentioned it in yesterday's blog post--I was at least getting my 3rd workout of the week in yesterday. All of the accountability and support was in place--and still, I didn't get it done. I almost made the trip down to the 24hour gym at midnight last night just to satisfy the nagging in my head. But then I stopped with that craziness. I decided to give myself a little grace and be okay. I have a new week in front of me now and a new opportunity to do things differently. A lot of things worked well this week. Some didn't. I'll carry forward the "well" parts and make adjustments for the challenging parts. That's how we do it around here, by golly! No self-imposed shame, no super-negative head chatter!! We must shut that stuff down or else we'll stuff it down with food, right? I'm okay. You're okay. We're okay. Let's carry on!

Mom and I had a good visit yesterday. I picked her up for the trip to and from Stillwater. I asked her to accompany me to the speaking event, but she's very shy, so instead, she opted to take that time for a good visit with her sister, brother, and brother-in-law while I attended the banquet.

What an amazing weekend so far. The standup show Friday night followed by the speaking engagement last night has kept me moving. I was asked to be the featured speaker at the annual Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Oklahoma fundraising event. It was truly an honor to be asked and to be in the same room with so many people who are doing amazing things for kids. My "Big," Clarke, came along at a pivotal time in my childhood and he undoubtedly had a profound positive impact on me. Being in that room last night was special to me. It brought back a flood of memories from my experience as a "Little" in the program. It was tough, emotionally, to get through the speech, but aside from a few emotional cracks in my delivery, it went very well.

I didn't know the menu for last night's banquet until I arrived. I was prepared just in case the offerings were not within my food plan boundaries. There was plenty of time before the dinner for me to find the caterer and ask a couple of questions about the meal. It took literally 20 seconds to get the answers I needed. No refined sugar on my plate! Several things were not on my plan--but this meal represents what was. It was a good meal. Normally, I don't eat before a speaking event, but I felt really at ease last night--so it made sense to eat dinner with everyone else.

My morning routine was completed earlier, my food plan is set for today, and I'm ready for a good Sunday. I hope you have a good one today, too!

February 23rd, 2019 Learned Something

February 23rd, 2019 Learned Something

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal by double, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I texted my main support contact yesterday with an interesting dynamic. I didn't want to eat. Normally, under stress and anxiety, my natural inclination is toward the food, and it wasn't yesterday. First of all, the standup gig last night worked out well. Like any comic, I'm super-self critical--only remembering the bits that didn't land. But it was a workshop set not a polished tried and true set. Anyway--back to the not eating thing... The best I can figure is, yes, I was stressed and super-anxious, however--I also had a focused mission to prepare. The certainty I was searching for was coming from what I could do as far as prepping for the show, not an illusion of certainty or temporary diversion, from food. I learned something!

I'm in front of a crowd again tonight at the Oklahoma Big Brothers/Big Sisters Banquet in my hometown. This time, it's not standup, it's simply sharing my story and childhood experience with their amazing mentoring program. I'm super-honored that they've asked me to speak at their event! My big brother, Clarke, would be proud!

I'll be headed to the RecPlex for a good workout this afternoon. It'll be my third of the week. One shy of my four sessions weekly goal. I'll look at that, make some adjustments, and make it happen more consistently. I feel better when I do, believe me!

I also have some work to do this afternoon for the radio station, but that shouldn't take too long.

My morning foundation routine was filled with gratitude this morning. I have a good food plan for today, a great support plan, and a centered feeling of peace and calm. I'm set and ready for a good Saturday.

A few pics from last night:
Kristin laughed a lot
even when I put her in some bits!

Hangin' with Kelleen, Susan,
and Kristin!

I was surprised when my daughter, Amber
showed up! She's often very busy--
and I wasn't expecting it! It was a treat.
I love you, Amber!!

February 22nd, 2019 Different Ways

February 22nd, 2019 Different Ways

Yesterday was a 6-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I enjoyed a good elliptical workout, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Yesterday was a good day in a few different ways. I felt like I was catching my breath and calm. It's been an interesting week with different stressors, so to find that was a good thing.

I had a short visit with mom before my workout last night--then made the decision to enjoy a meal out. I've cut way down on the number of meals out in the last month or so thanks to the star system I started using to "grade" my daily practice. Fajita chicken tacos made sense last night--right before my Thursday night support group conference call.

I worked on assembling my standup set after the call last night. My friend Wade Tower and I will perform a stand-up show tonight at a local restaurant. It's a fun way for me to exercise that part of me. It's just for the joy of doing it. The last time I did one of these there, it was a packed room--so we're hoping for the same tonight. Tomorrow night, I'll be speaking in front of an audience too--except it'll be at a special banquet for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Oklahoma. They've asked me to share my story and experience with their incredible program. I'm honored!
Wade and I met at a gig 7 years ago and we've worked together
a few times since. He's a talented singer and comedian!
We enjoy pointing at each other

My morning foundation routine is complete, my food is planned and packed for breakfast and lunch, and I'm about to walk out the door into my Friday. Before I go...

February 21st, 2019 Certainty

February 21st, 2019 Certainty

Yesterday was another 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all my meals, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Mom was very happy to be out of the hospital and back at her place yesterday. The staff at the nursing home were happy to see her, too. The uncertainty for a few days was replaced with certainty; she's going to be okay.

I've found that maintaining a balance with my food and exercise requires that I'm mindful of my emotional and stress level balance, first. When things are going smoothly in the non-food & exercise areas of my life, I feel empowered and confident. When life throws a curve ball or two, and suddenly things aren't as harmonious--that's when my awareness level must be on the highest setting.

I've given myself quite a bunch of self-study in this area of balance. My conclusion centers around one of the basic human needs: Certainty.

When things get bumpy and out of sorts, the first thing that goes is the comforting feeling of certainty. My deeply ingrained reaction to the loss of certainty is to replace it as quickly as possible--if not with certainty, with something that gives me the illusion of certainty. For me, obviously--it's always been food.

Of course, it's only an illusion of certainty. A bag of double cheeseburgers never gave me peaceful certainty in the middle of turbulent times. It only gave me an illusion of certainty within the amount of time it successfully distracted me from the reality at hand. After the distraction, the uncertainty remained--but worse; compounded with self-loathing over the binge.

One of the biggest realizations for me was found in taking responsibility for my part in creating uncertainties. It's the, my own worst enemy deal. I don't create every uncertainty in my life, but I've certainly been responsible for a good share. Being mindful of my behavior and actions and how they can potentially upset my balance of certainty is a critical awareness to maintain each and every day.

Nobody is immune to this certainty dynamic. How does anyone like me get through the loss or weakened state of uncertainty without taking a tour of every drive-through in the area?

In my opinion, it comes down to the ability to compartmentalize certainty. And doing that requires taking a personal inventory of things we're grateful for in our lives. In this exploration--this inventory, we can find certainty where we weren't looking. And then we can believe that all is not lost because we have something, several things, perhaps, that are certain in our lives. Instead of feeling like everything is total chaos--we can find peace in some areas and that helps us deal with the uncertainty in other areas.

My gratitude list is long and that helps my uncertainty list feel a little shorter.

There will always be issues upsetting the balance of certainty. Serenity, right? God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference. Things I cannot change--things out of my control create a measure of uncertainty. Courage to change the things I can create measures of certainty.

I've written before about the importance of keeping my lifestream and fundamental elements stream running parallel and not letting them cross. Losing certainty in certain areas can create turbulence within the streams. When the forces of uncertainty are pressed and we're holding our fundamental elements stream steady, it's not easy. Dropping the fundamental elements stream, effectively allowing the lifestream to come crashing down across, might seem like a very natural thing to do--and considering the circumstances, we sometimes experience, it might also seem completely excusable.

But why would I drop something I'm immensely grateful for having in my life, especially in exchange for the chaos and uncertainty of whatever we're passing through at the moment?

In keeping steady the things for which I'm most grateful and finding the certainty in the things I can, it will only help me in dealing with the uncertainty of most anything else. The illusions of the contrary will not fool me into believing otherwise.

February 20th, 2019 Better Outcome

February 20th, 2019 Better Outcome

Yesterday was 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all my meals, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

We could not have asked for a better outcome from the testing mom underwent yesterday. It was such a relief to get the news. The issue that prompted the major concern and scare turned out to be caused by minor things that can be easily corrected. Thank you to everyone who added mom to their prayer list over the last couple days. I'll be headed to the hospital soon to pick her up and return her to the nursing home where her care will continue. Mom is naturally a nervous person and I must say, she was exceptionally worked up with uncertainty going into yesterday's procedure. It was nice to see her more relaxed, smiling, and relieved! Whenever the doc says, "there was an area of concern on the cat scan," it starts the mind racing with all kinds of stories.

I haven't slept well the past few nights. Even last night wasn't the best. I didn't get my exercise session in yesterday either. I must get three more sessions in by Saturday in order to hit my four-session goal for this week. I'll do it, I'm certain.

Yesterday was a really good food day. I even broke out of my normal routine for lunch and tried something new. (Included in Tweet below) It was fantastic! One of my food plan goals of late is getting a little more creative at lunch time. I never thought I'd say it, but I might be growing weary of lunch tostadas. They're good, I love 'em--but trying a few different things would be a positive thing. I keep plenty of variety at dinner time--but breakfast and lunch tend to be more routine.

I completed my morning foundation routine and I'm well into my Wednesday. I hope yours is a good one!

February 19th, 2019 Mom

February 19th, 2019 Mom

Yesterday was 7-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all my meals, I did the elliptical workout, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

The call came in from the nursing home about 11am yesterday morning. Mom was having a serious bleeding incident and they weren't sure what was going on. They had called the ambulance and was notifying me that she'd be on her way to the emergency room within minutes.

I quickly checked out from work and made my way to the hospital to meet her there. The uncertainty of the situation kept my brain in a hyper-horrible worrisome thoughts mode. The doctors and staff acted quickly, got her stabilized, and started the process of finding out what exactly is going on. There's some kind of internal bleeding happening in her low abdomen. The cat scan revealed an "area of concern" for the two doctors evaluating the results. Mom is in the hospital and this morning the tests, including a scope, will continue to search for exactly what's going on. Your prayers and positive energy would be greatly appreciated.

My main focus yesterday and now is on mom. At the same time, for someone like me, I must be very careful with my daily practice. It's emotional and uncertain situations like this that can quickly send me spiraling toward the food in a futile effort to change how I feel.

I made some reach out support calls and texts, said some prayers, kept family and friends informed about what was going on, and I made a commitment to stay within the boundaries of my practice.

By 1pm I was hungry and searching. I had eaten 42g of almonds earlier but now I was missing lunch. We were in a waiting mode in the ER, so I made my way to the cafeteria and really couldn't find anything I wanted to make work. I decided to try a vending machine (danger-danger!!) for some salsa flavored tortilla chips--something of a hold-over until later, but after spending the dollar, the ingredients list contained refined sugar--and that immediately disqualifies it as an option for me. I gave it to the nurses' station. At this point, I decided to simply wait until I could get home and prepare something. I drank water and was fine.

I scrapped my original swimming plan for yesterday evening but still got in an elliptical workout. After visiting with mom and the nursing staff, I ran out to the nursing home for a few things she needed, like her cpap machine, then made my way to the RecPlex for some exercise while mom visited with Amber back in her room. It worked out well.

I'm headed to work for a little while this morning before I go back to the hospital with mom. Again, your prayers and whatever positive energy you can muster this way would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading and your continued support,
Practice, peace, and calm,
Sean

February 18th, 2019 Get-Together

February 18th, 2019 Get-Together

Yesterday was 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

The original plan included a swim yesterday. I made the decision to not do that yesterday and I was okay with it, the week is early. I haven't enjoyed time with Noah in a very long time, so mom and I invited him along for mom's outing last night. Oh my goodness, that little guy is fun! Kristin met up with us at the restaurant, too. It was a wonderful little get-together!

I did my usual fajita chicken tacos. One of the great things about being a semi-regular at this particular restaurant: They've memorized my on-plan order. It's an order of ala carte ingredients--then I prepare the tacos at the table. I started saying my order and the server completed my sentences. Uh, yes--exactly, thank you!

My morning routine is complete. I'm ready for a good Monday. My food is planned and packed for breakfast and lunch--and dinner is planned. I will be at the RecPlex later today for a good workout!

February 17th, 2019 Shoving Life Under A Blanket Of Food

February 17th, 2019 Shoving Life Under A Blanket Of Food

Yesterday was another 7-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all of my meals, I did another fantastic 30-minute elliptical workout, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

The plan was to swim yesterday but I waited too late. I was reminded that the pool closes an hour before the facility closes. Oh yeah, that. I quickly made a pivot in the plan and jumped on the elliptical. I'll get there earlier today!

It's okay to have a day that doesn't go exactly how I envisioned and STILL take extraordinary care. Deciding the fundamental elements of my plan shall not be sacrificed, come what may, is by far one of the most important decisions I make each day.

Life will always contain stressful and emotional situations. They may change in shape and size and with consequences big and small, but they will always be a part of a balanced and normal life.

It was a scary revelation because I had decided, concretely, that I couldn't in any way, shape or form--lose weight successfully unless everything was smooth sailing, every day, every week and so on.

I accepted, as fact: When the rain starts pouring, I start eating. Avoiding the internal dialogue of my auto-pilot mode was and remains an important part of this daily practice. It is, because...

Some of the most powerful words are never spoken because they come in the form of affirming thoughts. I always eat when I'm stressed. I always eat when I get emotional. "That," (insert whatever "that" is, here) makes me want to eat."

This perspective afforded me an endless supply of excellent excuses for why "now isn't a good time."

A "perfect time" is a myth. If I had waited for the perfect time, there's a good chance I wouldn't be alive today.

When someone asks me, what clicked on September 15th, 2008? It was truly the realization that if I was going to survive, I had to remain consistent come what may. I had to walk in the rain and not be afraid. I had to make an iron-clad decision that this time was going to be different from any other previous attempt.

No longer could I allow my resolve to be hard wired into the ups and downs of life. My resolve required a separate power source.

This realization that if I attached my consistency to the ups and downs of life, I might forever be stuck on a merry go round of yo-yo dieting, was profound.

Allowing myself to become the victim of life's circumstances time and time again, was super convenient. It didn't require me to get real or take responsibility for my extraordinary care because I was placing that responsibility on the randomness of life. I had to change my perspective or die young at over 500 pounds.

I decided to choose change before change chose me. Because one way or another, a change was coming...and quickly.

This realization gave birth to my parallel streams philosophy.

For me, Day 1 was the start of my parallel streams philosophy, I just didn't know what to call it back then.

The "Lifestream" is everything happening in our day to day lives. The Life Stream includes the ups and downs, the challenges, the victories, the disappointments, The hectic schedules, the family dynamics, the workplace dynamics, the bills, the stress, the joys, the blessings, the expected and the unexpected, the good, the bad...It's life.

The "Fundamental Elements Stream" are comprised of the elements of my personal plan. I say "my" because our plans might be very different. Mine is customized to fit my personality, likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, and sensitivities.

My fundamental elements stream includes my personal/spiritual morning "me time," the most peaceful part of my entire day. My fundamental elements stream also includes maintaining the integrity of my calorie budget, remaining abstinent from refined sugar, logging everything in MyFitnessPal, getting regular workouts and staying connected with one on one and group support interactions and of course, writing and publishing this blog, every day.

I've also referred to my fundamental elements as my "rails of support." I've set my accountability and support measures on high. When someone makes a comment in the direction of, "you're so strong" or "you must have amazing will power," I typically thank them and smile, but I know, truly, I'm not that strong and I don't have giant amounts of will power. What I have are solid rails of accountability and support--and I'm holding onto those rails, each day. They guide me, step by step.

The fundamental elements stream runs parallel, just below the lifestream. The lifestream is running in the foreground and the fundamental elements stream is running in the background--like a computer's anti-virus program.

I've written countless paragraphs within the archives of this blog all about the "lifestream" and the "fundamental elements stream" and how they must run parallel to one another without crossing.

If we allow life and all of the energy it takes to maneuver, to negatively affect our ability to maintain consistency in the daily elements of our extraordinary care, then it always will. The frustration of inconsistency will be a common theme if the lifestream is allowed to dip down into the fundamental elements stream on a regular basis.

And if we get too carried away, making the fundamental elements all-consuming, then we run the risk of it crossing up into our lifestream. And that's when it isn't any fun and we dread what we're doing every day.

I've had several challenges where I really had to remember the power of this "parallel streams" philosophy. I've discovered, when life demands more attention, we don't have to let go of the elements giving us our success, but we can scale back the amount of energy it uses to operate those fundamental elements. Identifying what is non-negotiable each day and what isn't becomes an important question.

In that place, we're in a position to discover ways we can act on life instead of reacting to life.

Some of the biggest, most important things I'm learning involve handling the things of life in more direct ways with real support and real solutions instead of the shallow support and temporary solution that comes with shoving life under a blanket of food.

We don't sacrifice the integrity of the elements, we just do what we can do.

Practice, peace, and calm,
Sean

February 16th, 2019 Something Better

February 16th, 2019 Something Better

Yesterday was a 7-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all of my meals, I did a wonderful 30-minute elliptical workout, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Getting back on the elliptical felt wonderful last night. I've returned to max-level 20 on the machine recently and oh my, let me tell you, the difference between resistance level 15 and 20 is significant. I'm sweating and pushing through, mentally and physically, within ten minutes on level twenty. The mental/emotional benefits are far greater than the physical. The endorphins are powerful things.

I sometimes listen to music during my workouts and at other times, a good podcast. I've recently discovered Conan O'Brien's podcast, Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend. Constantly smiling and occasionally laughing while doing the intense elliptical routine changes the workout into something better. I suppose it's because the focus is redirected--I'm not focusing on the burn in my legs or the sweat on my brow, my brain is focusing on the content I'm feeding it. One time, I remember showing up at the gym without my earbuds--oh my, that was the longest and most brutal workout for me, because all I could focus on was the physical energy needed for the workout. The brain is fascinating; so powerful, isn't it?

I plan on getting back to the gym this afternoon for a good swimming session. I'm not meeting my goal of four workout sessions for the week, but I'm okay with this considering the circumstances of the week. Fourteen trips to the gym in a four week period is a tremendous change compared to the previous several months.

I'm excited about doing a stand-up show next Friday with my friend, comedian and singer, Wade Tower. We've booked it for the 22nd at a local restaurant. Ground Round Grill and Bar will transform into a comedy club from 9 to 10:30pm. I think it's important to do things that bring us joy. Working out material with a microphone, an audience, and generating laughs, brings me immense joy. The opportunity to catch up with Wade is a fantastic bonus.

My morning foundation practice/routine is complete. I'm about to prepare a good on-plan breakfast followed by getting ready to attend a funeral with Kristin. Kristin lost a dear friend of hers earlier this week. I knew him too and he was an incredible person. Marty Ladd passed way too young, in his mid 60's. He was loved by many in this community--very fitting that his funeral is being held in Robson Fieldhouse.

February 15th, 2019 Help Me Land

February 15th, 2019 Help Me Land

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all of my meals, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

For some reason, yesterday was much harder, emotionally, than in previous years. I'll always miss my little brother Shane, but yesterday was a hurting/missing. I felt on an emotional edge most of the day. It hasn't been quite like that in several years. I made direct support reach outs critically important yesterday. They're always important, but on days like that, even more.
It was a good food day.

Mom was also missing Shane more than normal yesterday. I always make a good visit with her important on Valentines Day. We visited for a little while, talked about Shane--and that helped too, reminiscing and laughing over the good times. Mom loved her card and flowers. She was feeling much better too and that was a wonderful thing. Her spirits were high after getting her hair fixed--and that helps, too.

I prepared a good Valentines Day dinner for my Valentine last night. It received rave reviews from Kristin, so yay me!!

My sweet Valentine!

I was feeling much better by evenings end.

One of the messages I received from a support friend yesterday was a good reminder about how the intensity of feelings subside, pass, and change--and to just ride 'em, feel 'em, live 'em, and allow them. Very true. It's hard to do this most of the time. I cannot count the number of years I would simply stuff down emotions with food. Now, the urge to do that still pops up every now and again and when it does, that's when I must turn the auto-pilot off and start doing intentional actions to help me "land" and be well. Sometimes we gotta be talked through that landing procedure!

My emotional stew yesterday, I believe, was intensified because lately the thought of being the last surviving brother has crossed my mind a lot for some reason--and I'm not sure why. Shane passed first, then my half brother Danny, then my other half brother, Chris. I didn't have relationships with Danny and Chris, I wasn't raised around them, but Shane was different, we were raised together and very close. All three of them died devastatingly young and although I certainly could have died just as young from the pressures of carrying around 500 pounds for almost twenty years, I somehow didn't. I don't know. I do know I'm grateful to be here. Very. Anyway, it just strikes an emotional chord with me for whatever reason.

I intentionally waited to post this until some break time at work, considering the late night last night. I did get up in time for my morning foundation routine. I packed and planned my food for the day and I'm grateful that the emotional edge of yesterday has passed.

February 14th, 2019 Shane

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all of my meals, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I'll be getting back to exercise schedule today. These 4-star days keep me, but I want more! I'm giving myself some love and compassion considering this week's challenges--and that's required me to lower my expectations for the week. Weeks like this will happen occasionally.

Today would have been my little brother Shane's 42nd birthday. It's hard to wrap my mind around the fact that he's been gone for eighteen years. As much as I want to believe that I've worked through the grieving process, this day often reminds me that I'm not sure I've ever fully worked through it all to a place of peace. I love and miss Shane, horribly.

February 13th, 2019 Structure

February 13th, 2019 Structure

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all of my meals, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

The strep test yesterday came back negative. The sore throat, coughing and general crud symptoms are running their course. I do feel much better this morning. I now know I'm not contagious and I'm headed back to work. I'm looking forward to getting back into the structure of the workday.

I prepared three good weighed and measured meals yesterday.

I found an excerpt from the archives that I wanted to share this morning. The point of the excerpt is how consistency isn't about being strong with loads of will power. It's about building a supportive structure for each day.

Every once in a while, I hear it: "Congratulations, you look great. You're so strong," or a similar quote. I accepted a version of this today from someone who I ran into at the grocery store, whom I hadn't seen in years. I don't think they're remotely aware of the relapse and regain period of this journey. I gracefully accepted the compliment with a "thank you, very much! I feel great too!"

Accepting a compliment and saying thank you instead of first listing off all of the reasons you believe their perception is inaccurate--is tough to do. It's important to embrace, though. I've found the urge to discount or immediately deny compliments have faded, but I still feel a little twinge in that direction. Old habits die hard.

Are we not worthy? It's not that, really. Yes, we are worthy. But I tend to examine things a little deeper, especially this notion that I'm super strong along this road. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the fragility of peace. It can be wiped away quickly. One day at a time is the truth.

Let me explain, please.

And keep in mind, I'm not discounting my success and where I am or what I'm doing. I'm simply offering perspective to this compliment I seem to attract every now and again.

Am I strong? Or have I just learned and put into practice the power of structure? Without the support structure of my fundamental elements, I'm not strong at all. If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know exactly what happened when I abandoned my "rails of support." I gained back 164 pounds. I suppose I don't do anything small.

The message here is to build your system. Find what works for you. Lean on the elements you need to keep you motivated and focused toward your extraordinary care. Never underestimate the power of support from others. When we try to do this alone is precisely the moment it gets super hard. Perhaps I'm strong at building my support structure. But on my own, I'm not strong at all. I'm affected, I'm complicated and most of all, I'm human.

But if I see you out and about and you offer me a compliment like the one described above, I'll not disagree with you. I'll gracefully accept your compliment. And if you're searching for the same strength, I'll encourage you, too. Because it's in you, I know it is.

It truly isn't about building up enough strength to go it alone. It's about strengthening your rails of support. Build your support structure. Don't be afraid of accountability measures, just make sure they're designed to hold you accountable to something you can sustain long-term.

February 12th, 2019 Stubborn

February 12th, 2019 Stubborn

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all of my meals, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support. My aim today is to actually go to the doctor, feel better, and reach 4 stars.

I'm stubborn. I will avoid going to the doctor until I realize that whatever it is isn't getting better. It takes the symptoms a little time to break through my layers of denial, first. I think I'm there. My throat this morning is not better. It's very sore, and to top it off--I feel nauseous. Paid sick days and health insurance are two things added to my gratitude list this morning.

I stretched the boundaries of my food plan last night with chicken noodle soup (after scanning the ingredients to make sure it didn't contain refined sugar or a synonym of sugar) and an Ezekiel grilled cheese sandwich. The sandwich wasn't the best choice for a sore throat. I left half of it on my plate--and threw it away, which for me, is the best indicator of wellness. If I'm not finishing a meal, I'm clearly not feeling well. I can count on two hands how many meals I haven't finished in my life. I'm trying to be humorous, of course, but that's probably not too far from the truth.

I'll wrap this edition. I'm waiting for the doctor's office to open so I can set an appointment for today. If they can't get me in, I'll go to an urgent care clinic. That's the plan.

Thank you for reading and your continued support,
Practice, peace, and calm,
Sean

February 11th, 2019 Rest And Recovery

February 11th, 2019 Rest And Recovery

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, I personally prepared all of my meals, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support. My aim today is to feel better and reach 4 stars.

I felt it coming on yesterday, this crud--coughing, sore throat--things that aren't good for anyone, and especially not good for someone who speaks for a living. Mom has the same thing going on. I opted to take a day for rest and recovery. I have OTC medicine--but if this doesn't improve, I'll be making an appointment with my doctor.

Along with work, I've had to postpone a dentist appointment originally scheduled for this afternoon, a mechanic appointment to get my car's brakes repaired, and I'm rescheduling the TV taping of the weekly cable access show I do for the school district. I've been on the phone constantly this morning!

On a day like today, I have to simplify my daily practice down to the minimum non-negotiable elements. I've completed my morning routine of meditation, prayer, and visualizations--and I'm committed to maintaining the boundaries of my food plan. If I can stay in today, that would be best for me, I'm certain.

I've received a couple of inquiries lately about my YouPlan Workshop. I do not currently have an in-person workshop scheduled, but I do have the complete audio recording of the 2-hour teleconference version presented not too long ago. If you're interested in receiving this workshop audio in your email, simply send me an email with your request: transformation.road@gmail.com and I'll email you back a secure PayPal invoice for the $25 workshop fee.

Thank you for reading and your continued support,
Practice, peace, and calm,
Sean
