February 18th, 2020 Made The Best Of It

February 18th, 2020 Made The Best Of It

Since our last edition, I've maintained the integrity of my food plan boundaries, I've remained refined sugar-free, I've met or exceeded my daily water goal, and I've stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I was able to get mom out for an outing on Sunday afternoon/evening, but it was super challenging, as expected. Between her decreased strength that makes her a constant fall risk and the always fluctuating brain fog, it was clearly a different experience for both of us. It was worth it despite the challenges because she needed to see the outdoors. She wasn't real thrilled with settling for a ride but we made the best of it by visiting Courtney, Noah, Oliver, and Phoebe.

I left work early yesterday with flu-like symptoms. I focused on more rest and taking it easy. I feel better this morning--maybe not 100%, but well enough to go to work. I'll reserve the right to leave early if needed and if the symptoms persist, I'll get to the doctor. I didn't visit mom yesterday because of this but we did speak several times. I noticed some confusion again but not the worst it's been.

My morning foundational routine is complete. This practice of prayer, meditation, gratitude, positive visualizations, and affirmations make a huge difference for me.

I hope to have a better day today. Thank you for reading and I hope your Tuesday is a good one, too!

February 15th, 2020 In Many Ways

February 15th, 2020 In Many Ways

Since our last edition, I've maintained the integrity of my food plan boundaries, I've remained refined sugar-free, I've met or exceeded my daily water goal, and I've stayed well connected with exceptional support.

My visit with mom last night included some good conversations about my little brother Shane. He was born on Valentine's Day in 1977. We always remember Shane, especially on that day. He passed away almost nineteen years ago at the age of twenty-four. He would have turned forty-three yesterday. Our love for Shane is always peppered with sadness but we did our best to recall the fun times we shared instead of focusing on the time we didn't get with him. In many ways, quite honestly, I don't think the two of us are finished grieving his loss even almost two decades later. For me, my dependence on food over the years as an "escape hatch" from dealing with real and raw emotions kept me from fully processing and grieving.

Shane's birthday cakes were always in the shape of a heart. I'm sure anyone who shares a Valentine's birthday can relate. Considering how much Shane loved life and people, it was the perfect birthday for him. He was always full of love.

We both had our hands in the frosting! This picture takes me back in a wonderful way. The craziest thing for me is realizing mom was only thirty-two years old when this picture was snapped! Today, at forty-eight, I look at thirty-two-year-olds like they're kids!

Of course, I was posing with a box of Little Debbie Snack Cakes. My grandmother and Amber in the background--and Shane, mom, and me--all of us at a restaurant. I'm still not sure why the snack cakes were brought along.

You can tell mom had a decent night of rest simply by looking at this picture. It's night and day different when she hasn't. The roses cheered her up quickly. I'm so grateful her care plan is helping keep her stable. She's really wanting to have an outing tomorrow. We tried last week and she just wasn't in any condition to get out and about. We will see how it is tomorrow!

In the meantime, my morning foundational routine is complete. I'm about to prepare and enjoy my breakfast--then it'll be time to run some errands before heading toward a location broadcast at a car dealership early this afternoon.

I'm feeling grateful and blessed this morning.

February 13th, 2020 In A Good Place

February 13th, 2020 In A Good Place

Since our last edition, I've maintained the integrity of my food plan boundaries, I've remained refined sugar-free, I've met or exceeded my daily water goal, and I've stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Mom and I attended her care plan meeting yesterday morning. It was a good meeting and it certainly seems that everyone is on the same page. Right now, the visual checks at night to make sure she's firmly on the CPAP are critically important. Her clarity each day seems to be a direct reflection of her night before. The more frequent checks--and mom staying on the CPAP with oxygen has given her two good days in a row. I call each morning to check on how she did overnight and when that report is a good one, mom is always in much better shape when I arrive later in the day. She was blessed with quite a bit of clarity this evening. We shared a good visit.

The good news is it certainly looks like this isn't a dementia situation. The doctor at the hospital talked about clearing these other factors first before dementia could be accurately assessed--and it seems we're at that point. She doesn't have a UTI or Digoxin toxicity anymore, so the only thing left is the fluctuating levels of Co2 buildup in her lungs. If that is managed, she seems to be in a good place.

I'm doing okay. My sleep hasn't been the best lately but I'm acknowledging what I can do to help improve that--and I'm doing. Less coffee and less nap time are the most obvious things I can change. Doing those things.
