June 2nd, 2014 Free From All That Noise
I managed to get to work this morning after a short three hours sleep. I could have pushed it an extra thirty minutes, but I knew if I did I wouldn't have time to prepare breakfast. This whole thing of taking time to take better care is something fairly new, at least on this level. Not preparing breakfast isn't an option I'm allowing. I can remember several times in a similar situation where I would navigate the choices in a drive through as best I could or run into a convenience store foraging for something I could feel good about. I have those skills should I ever need to employ them in an emergency. It wasn't an emergency this morning.
I headed home after my show for a nap before returning in the afternoon. I prepared a fantastic lunch using a Joseph's 60 calorie pita, a turkey burger, mozzarella and some all natural sweet potato fries. I've started using the George Foreman grill at work and at home to "dry grill" sandwiches--or in the case of today's lunch, the pita. The results have been fantastic. No added calories while transforming it into a different experience, so good!
I found out that Monday afternoons around 5:30pm is the busiest time for a workout at the YMCA. I was lucky to find one machine open on the row and type I prefer. I'm still able to walk in there without even the slightest hesitation or negative feeling. I hold my head high, slip in my ear buds, turn on my music and I'm gone to another world where I can do anything. I saw several people there whom I haven't seen in some time. Still--no feelings of shame or embarrassment. That breakthrough Y trip a while back literally set me free from all that noise.
I made a small grocery trip this evening. I don't like big grocery trips. I like small-focused trips. That's what this was tonight. I enjoyed some whole wheat pasta, just to try something different. It's been in my cupboard a while. I usually avoid pasta, but in this case, I carefully measured all ingredients--so I was confident in what I was eating. I topped it with an all natural sugar free marinara with 2oz of lean ground beef. A side of baked mushroom cap with marinara and mozzarella and some pineapple rounded out this interesting meal.
I've reached a point where I'm calming down and taking a very nice one day at a time approach. Am I excited for the road ahead?? Oh yeah. Very. But I'm keeping my feet on the ground and maintaining the steps important to my recovery.
I welcome you to friend me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/seananderson505) and MyFitnessPal (myfitnesspal.com/seanaanderson) and of course my live-tweet Twitter account where I share pictures and calorie counts of every single thing I eat, everyday.
Speaking of, it's about time for my #lastfoodofday!

Wow, three hours? That's rough. Hope you get to rest in between. I really like whole wheat pasta too. I make a low-cal version of baked ziti that is pretty deliciozo. I don't measure the ingrediants but I'll have to the next time I make it so I can share it with you and FB friends. Take care ~ Jules
ReplyDeleteYum--Baked ziti sounds really good. I rarely eat pasta--but when I do, I go for the whole wheat. Not sure if it's any better for me than the regular... Measuring, for me, is paramount. I don't have good guessing skills when it comes to pasta!! :)
DeleteI'm amazed that you can function on so little sleep, especially on the air! That's the sign of a professional, I guess. Glad you got a nap in, and kudos and also getting in a gym workout. Your meals looked great, as always.
ReplyDeleteBecky--After 26 years in this business, I've developed the ability to sound perfectly fine regardless of sickness or lack of sleep... usually, that is-- A few months ago my sleep deprivation was getting me to the point of not being able to sound alert on the air. I had some morning shows where I was slurring and completely forgetting elements of my show---because of it. I'm glad the weather coverage deal isn't a regular thing. Oh--by the way, I hope you get this--- The mushroom pizza cap recipe you requested: Large Mushroom cap, marinara (I use a sugar free version--or you can make your own) and a 50 calorie slice of mozzarella... Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Wash cap lightly...shaking excess water ...then place cap on a baking sheet top side down (spray cooking sheet lightly with non-stick spray) Spread a serving or 1/2 serving of marinara (depending on your calorie budget and taste) on top of the gills of the cap...Place mozzarella slice on top--season as you wish (I use black pepper) and bake anywhere from 20-30 min or until the cheese is lightly brown and bubbly. The calorie count will depend on the size of the cap, the amount of marinara and mozzarella... Typically between 120-150 total....Hope you enjoy!!
DeleteI find I also have to take this weight loss journey one day at a time. Sometimes even a hour at a time. You sound like you are doing great!
ReplyDeleteThank you Katrin! Yes--sometimes it's "just get me through the next fifteen min," right? I'm feeling really good. Thank you!
DeleteOne quick comment -- glad to see you back, BTW -- about your experience at the Y. You may walk in one day in the future and for whatever reason feel insecure or nervous about being there. Don't be surprised or punked by this, just ride it out. The comment you made -- "That breakthrough Y trip a while back literally set me free from all that noise" -- indicates that you may still be thinking of these challenges as things that you can solve once and then be fine forever after. Unfortunately, all people tend to hit walls repeatedly. A problem that you think has been solved will probably rear its head again at some point in the future. It doesn't mean you failed, it doesn't mean that you're no good, and it doesn't mean that the original epiphany was worthless. It just means that, like all challenges, they're never fully solved.
ReplyDeleteSo this is just a quick word of warning. You've already realized this about your relationship with food, but you may find it popping up regarding exercise as well. Be wary of thinking that any problem is solved once and then it never arises again. If you fall prey to that thinking, then when the problem arises again -- as it inevitably will -- you may end up thinking that the world is coming to an end when it's not. :-)
Janis-- Oh my, you're right! I sincerely appreciate your wonderful insight and catching me there--- I wouldn't dare declare anything like that about food or weight loss, ever again...make sense that I shouldn't with the mental/emotional dynamics... Excellent observation.
Delete3 hours sleep? Seriously? I could never survive. Ever. It would never even cross my mind as an option. Something has got to go in your life is you can't fit in a night's rest every night. Our bodies are not made to function on 3 hours sleep. Or, was the lack of sleep because you couldn't get to sleep although you were in bed?
ReplyDeleteNo, I can fall asleep fine. It was being on-call for severe weather coverage. Storms moved in late and I was at the studio on air until almost 2am.. I was back on the air at 6am--worked three hours, then left to go back home and sleep. Yeah--I couldn't operate if that was a normal thing....ever!! It's simply one of the things about my schedule and being on call 24/7.
