December 19th, 2015 Beaten Up

December 19th, 2015 Beaten Up

I feel like I've been beaten up. Here's what happened: I was jolted awake last night sometime after 4am with muscle cramps in my lower legs and feet. Strange really, because I'm getting enough potassium, I'm pretty sure.

Anyway-- I've learned the quickest way to get rid of the initial pull is to stand up--or basically apply resistance to the affected muscles. Half asleep--I jump up to my feet...and I'm not even awake, really--not fully...and I can't keep my balance....I immediately fell across the room (thanks to me trying to over-correct the imbalance) and did a header into my bedroom doorway frame before landing on the floor in the hallway.

I tried to get up too quick, was dizzy and fell again. Then I stayed there for about five minutes trying to figure out what happened and why I was in the middle of the floor in my small hallway.

My heart was racing and I was sweating. I finally pulled myself up and slowly made my way back to the bed where I collapsed.

I have two knots on my head and a decent sized carpet burn on my back right shoulder blade. And as the day progressed, I noticed my ribs on the left side became more and more sore and sensitive. I can pinpoint the exact spot on my ribs where it hurts the worst.

I've never experienced anything like it in all my life.

It all happened so fast. I entertained the idea of checking to see if a colleague could do my location broadcast but by mid-morning the soreness hadn't fully developed so I decided to get my job done.

I planned to do a couple of short guest sets tonight at the comedy club in my hometown. I was still planning this until about 5pm, when I realized it hurt to breathe and moving quickly was a challenge. I needed rest and relaxation, so I cancelled.

I almost made a trip to the urgent care facility (we have three, but only one was open tonight), then decided to wait until morning.

I have a knot on the left side of my head and one on the back of my head, a bruised rib (or worse--I guess I'll find out tomorrow at the urgent care clinic). Oh--and this nice little carpet burn on my shoulder blade:

Ouch. I'm grateful this wasn't worse, because it could have been much worse.

I'm letting the Tweets tell the rest of the day's details--

  1. Please go to urgent care, Sean. If it more than a bruised rib, it could puncture your lung, easily. Take care of yourself, and let us know what they say. Keeping you in my prayers today.

  4. Sean,

I'm sorry that most have been so frightening. I'm only writing this because you imply the worst is over and things are better, but that sounds a bit like a Jerry Lewis or Jim Carrey scene. You were bouncing all over the place in a split second. I really do hope it's all over and a one-time thing. All the best.

  5. I've found that I get leg and feet cramps when I don't have enough water in the day, but I know you're good about drinking water. A lady once told me that getting up and drinking a bottle of water "should not work" because I was watering down my already low potassium. May be, but it works for me.

Just to be on the safe side, I'd probably get the rib checked out. Hope today goes well for you. :)

  6. Ouch! I hope you keep a bag of ice on those two knots on your head and get a chest x-ray this morning. Turmeric with bio-perine seemed to keep cramps away for me. Staying hydrated is important. Some people keep little packets of mustard nearby for leg cramps and I think that does help a little bit. I feel your pain!!!

  7. Don't take turmeric now with bruising or before an operation. It is a mild blood thinner.

  8. Head injuries require immediate evaluation for lowest risk. Hope you'll do that sooner rather than later.

  12. Please Let us know the results of your walk in clinic visit!!!!
I get leg cramps also and sometime it is because my legs are not warm enough. In addition to enough water, potassium & fluids, I've found keeping my legs & feet warm in winter, keeps them away.

  13. Sean.. its really not anything to push. One does not get up from a cramp / lose their balance and then get dizzy for no apparent reason. Not preaching. But yes. It happened to me. And I ignored the signs. I ended up very sick. These things happen to tell you something. Your body is telling you something. So listen. I didn't. In the hospital and out of commission for 12 weeks. I fell into a wall after losing my balance. Then I was just dizzy. One day for a bit... 2nd day... 3rd day... and then I fell again... not fun.
Good luck and get to the docs!
    Rosie :)

  14. You should definitely check out the original cause of the fall, could be something nasty like a mini stroke. Hope everything turns out ok.
