May 2nd, 2015 Master Level

May 2nd, 2015 Master Level

It's funny, really. When I woke up this morning, I actually thought about how I was going to make time to get into the Y for a workout in between commitments this afternoon. I didn't realize what a workout today would become, without my usual visit to the Y.

I was the emcee and ceremonial DJ for a huge wedding this evening at the Marland Mansion. The job required me to bring sound equipment, including four large speakers and a mixer/amp unit and all of the accessories needed to make it work. I arrived shortly before 10am to setup and test everything.

First, I had to pick up a truck (thanks to my future son-in-law for trading me vehicles for the day), then pick up the equipment, loading it all--and transporting to the mansion, where I unloaded--and then carried each heavy piece (one of them rolled, thank goodness) of equipment a good block or so to the setup area.

Once I set it all up--it didn't work. No sound. I scrambled for a solution and stressed out for over three hours before discovering the "master level" was turned all the way down. It wasn't a cabling issue or a blown fuse--or a bad amp...Nope. It was me missing a very simple step in the setup. I was going nuts trying to figure out the issue. I kept thinking...I must fix this somehow, someway--the ceremony depends on it! It was high stress.

The situation kept me from having lunch with a former broadcasting mentor who was in town for the day. I did get a chance to meet up with him for a little while. I was 17 years old when he started mentoring me. He was 27 at the time and to me, he was Mr. Radio. I wanted to be just like him. It was really cool to see him again. He greeted me with a big, "You look great!" I told him, "I feel great, thank you!" He looked great, too. Except for some gray hair, he pretty much looked the same as he did 26 years ago.

Once the issue with the sound equipment wasn't an issue anymore, I had just enough time to give my old friend and mentor, and the broadcast engineering friends he brought with him, a tour of our studios inside the historic Poncan Theatre. After the quick tour, I rushed to the Mexican restaurant close to my apartment--picked up lunch, came home--assembled it, enjoyed it--then it was time to clean up and change into the tuxedo before returning to the mansion.

Looking at the size large shirt hanging in my vanity area, was--well, interesting. It looked too small to me. I was thrilled with how well this smaller tuxedo fit my transforming body.

The tux felt good.

This full body profile shot shows dramatic progress. The statue in the picture is Lydie Marland. I believe Jennifer Lawrence is set to play the part of Lydie in an upcoming film about the Life and Times of Oklahoma oilman E.W. Marland.

I didn't know what to expect tonight, food-wise. Once I noticed what the caterers were preparing, I knew I could easily navigate good choices. I put together a plate, eyeballing portion sizes--guessing really--then I made my way back outdoors where my digital food scale was waiting in my man bag. I used it to compare my guess work with reality. Turns out, I was fairly accurate. I had guesstimated 3oz of turkey--it was 2.95oz, 1oz of swiss cheese--and it was exactly 1oz, and 1oz of cheddar--and it turned out to be a little more at 1.15oz.

I don't think anyone noticed my food weighing/measuring. Once the plate was counted and tweeted, I finished it and made my way around making some final announcements about the newlywed's first dance.

The big workout day continued with load-out. It took almost an hour to carry and load each heavy thing--then back to the storage area to unload it all again. I should have recruited some people to help me--but honestly, by this time I was realizing what a significant exercise day I was having--and that's how I looked at it--I was exercising.

I had almost an 1,100 calorie burn today. Over 17,000 steps--8 miles worth, according to my FitBit Flex. This is the most activity I've had in one day since the boot camp classes I attended in the summer of 2010!

And to think, I was worried about being able to make time for an intentional workout today. It wasn't an elliptical ride--but this day proved to be over-the-top in the physical movement.

I ran into several people I knew, including my doctor. Last time he saw me, I had the facial hair and a head of hair that was a touch over-due for a haircut..."I almost didn't recognize you," he said.

" I almost didn't recognize you" always feels good to hear.

    1. Good advice, TR--start with the most obvious. At one point, I was convinced the system was toast.
There were so many food choices--it made it easier to navigate. They even had servers carrying trays of sushi and caviar. It was opulence at its finest.
      Thank you!

  6. Great food choices at the wedding and you look (use your best Billy Crystal voice here) Mahvalus in that tux. That is my goal, to look good again in a suit and not feel like it's a tent over me. Congrats. As for the equipment, just think how those weight workouts help in that regards. :)

    1. I'll tell you, Michael--the selection of choices was far greater; more elaborate than I anticipated. Seriously, I could have easily made three or four different looking plates--all within my personal boundaries and plan.
I totally agree-my body was in much better condition to handle the load in and load out...had it been 505 pound me, trying to do it--oh my, could have been tragic. I truly appreciated the increased strength I felt...it helped, tremendously.

  7. I definitely have to agree with everyone on how great you look. It's a amazing how quickly the steps add up when you stay busy all day. This past Friday was suppose to be a rest day for me, but I was so busy catching up on errands, staying busy all day I still ended up with over 16,000 steps. I am glad you were able acknowledge the good workout you had without having to go to gym. I am gaining more respect and feel blessed to get my fitness naturally through my work when I used to consider it a burden, being so difficult at times. I am enjoy physical work, being busy every day. Just like the day you enjoyed Saturday. As a suggestion, I encourage you to think of ways to have more physical stay busy all day days in your future. Perhaps join a club like the lions club or an active volunteer group. Take your grandson hiking or join an outdoor fitness group. Take your fitness to another level at times which incorporate the feels good feeling, inspire yourself and others along the way.
