August 26th, 2019 DEFCON Type Thing

August 26th, 2019 DEFCON Type Thing

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Mom and I had a very nice dinner out last night followed by a great visit and drive around the area. I decided to take a break from my usual chicken tacos, too. It was a nice switch-up that required a couple of questions of the chef. I ordered the shredded chicken enchiladas with freshly prepared enchilada sauce, easy on the cheese. Question 1: How much cheese? Question 2: Do you use refined sugar in the recipe? The answers were good, "as much or as little as you desire" and "No, absolutely no sugar in the recipe." It is almost impossible to find a canned version without sugar listed on the ingredients, but, judging the reaction to the question, the mere mention of it as a possible ingredient at this Mexican restaurant was almost an insult! It took literally twenty seconds to get the info I needed, the green light, if you will, for my order. (See Instagram post below)

This post was supposed to hit much earlier. Weather coverage tonight changed the plan! But that's behind me, so I'll carry on...

From the text support hotline (580-491-2228):

I've found that maintaining a balance with my daily practice requires that I'm mindful of my emotions and stress level balance, first. When things are going smoothly in the non-food & non-exercise areas of my life, I feel empowered and confident. When life throws a curveball or two, and suddenly things aren't as harmonious--instability can settle in quickly--and that's when my awareness level must be on the highest setting. I've likened it to a "DEFCON" type thing. DEFCON is short for "defense readiness condition." A DEFCON of 5 is peaceful and any number below that is less peaceful. However, if I'm willing to meet it with intentional actions that are supportive, I can find my way back to a 5.

I've given quite a bunch of self-study in this area of balance. My conclusion centers around one of the basic human needs: Certainty.

When things get bumpy and out of sorts, the first thing that goes is the comforting feeling of certainty. My deeply ingrained reaction to the loss of certainty is to replace it as quickly as possible--if not with certainty, with something that gives me the illusion of certainty. For me, obviously--it's always been food.

Of course, it's only an illusion of certainty. A bag of double cheeseburgers never gave me peaceful certainty in the middle of turbulent times. It only gave me an illusion of certainty within the amount of time it successfully distracted me from the reality at hand. After the distraction, the uncertainty remained--but worse; compounded with self-loathing over the binge.

One of the biggest realizations for me was found in taking responsibility for my part in creating uncertainties. It's the, my own worst enemy deal. I don't create every uncertainty in my life, but I've certainly been responsible for a good share. Being mindful of my behavior and actions and how they can potentially upset my balance of certainty is a critical awareness to maintain each and every day.

Nobody is immune to this certainty dynamic. How does anyone like me get through the loss or weakened state of uncertainty without taking a tour of every drive-through in the area?

In my opinion, it comes down to the ability to compartmentalize certainty. And doing that requires taking a personal inventory of things we're grateful for in our lives. In this exploration--this inventory, we can find certainty where we weren't looking. The mental/emotional/spiritual parts of the practice really step up in these temporary circumstances. And if we can get back to a place where we believe all is not lost because we have something, several things, perhaps, that are certain in our lives, we can reclaim our footing.

Instead of feeling like everything is total chaos--we can find peace in some areas and that helps us deal with the uncertainty in other areas.

My gratitude list is long and that helps my uncertainty list feel a little shorter.

There will always be issues upsetting the balance of certainty. Serenity, right? God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference. Things I cannot change--things out of my control create a measure of uncertainty. Courage to change the things I can create measures of certainty.

I've written before about the importance of keeping my lifestream and fundamental elements stream running parallel and not letting them cross. Losing certainty in certain areas can create turbulence within the streams. When the forces of uncertainty are pressed and we're holding our fundamental elements stream steady, it's not easy. Dropping the fundamental elements stream, effectively allowing the lifestream to come crashing down across, might seem like a very natural thing to do--and considering the circumstances, we sometimes experience, it might also seem completely excusable.

But why would we drop something we're immensely grateful for, especially in exchange for the chaos and uncertainty of whatever we're passing through at the moment?

In keeping steady the things for which we're most grateful and finding the certainty in the things we can, it will only help us in dealing with the uncertainty of most anything else. In this perspective, the illusions of the contrary will not fool us into believing otherwise.

August 25th, 2019 Back To Me

August 25th, 2019 Back To Me

Yesterday was a 5-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, I had a good walk to a couple of stores yesterday morning, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I've been trying something new lately, where I leave my car parked and walk to the store(s). This accomplishes a few things: I get some good exercise, I get the groceries I need, and I don't overbuy because whatever I purchase, I must carry it home! I'll save the watermelon purchases for when the car is waiting in the parking lot.

My Sunday morning started with on-air weather coverage, first thing. I got it done and got back to me pretty quickly. My Sunday morning foundational routine was good for me. I followed that by listening to an hour of Dr. Marty Lerner speaking. It was a replay of a speaking event he did for my private support group last year. I've learned so much from him. His free ebook, "A Guide To Eating Disorder Recovery-Defining The Problem and Finding The Solution" is outstanding. You can request your free copy at www.milestonesprogram.org.

This has been a restful weekend in many ways. I've enjoyed it very much! I'm picking up mom in a little while for our weekly outing. We'll have a good dinner, conversation, and a nice drive. There might be some light shopping for her in there, not sure about that, we'll see!

My new website shares a phone number with my podcast, Transformation Planet, and it's always available for you! Have a question about anything discussed on this blog or heard on the podcast? Text me! Do you have a question about your own plan practice? Text it! 580-491-2228 I'll text you back!

August 24th, 2019 A Practice In Perspective

August 24th, 2019 A Practice In Perspective

Yesterday was a 5-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, I rocked the elliptical at the RecPlex, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Yesterday was a really nice Friday. The reviews are in and the new website gets a thumbs up from just about everybody! Thank you! Some tweaks have been made all over the site and of course, changes will be ongoing. I'm looking forward to creating more content! Haven't checked it out? www.imchoosingchange.com

I allowed myself to get distracted last night while preparing dinner and almost ruined it all--however, it was still good. See the Instagram below. I pride myself on being somewhat of a decent multitasker, but some things require a little more attention!

My workout on the elliptical was a music-filled, super-enjoyable experience. I'm contemplating ways I can evolve my workouts. Less contemplation and more action is in order for all that! I'm headed in that positive direction.

My excitement for the road ahead is in a good place. My positive visualizations are sharply in focus. This visualizations practice started from Day 1, although at the time I didn't know; didn't understand their role or appreciate their power for my brain--and consequently, my behaviors. As I look back in a study of what worked well and what didn't work well, I can identify where their impact played a key role in the best of times and how when I stopped the practice at certain points--and allowed myself to go into dark places, things didn't go well at all. The visualizations are part of my daily foundational routine. It's one of the pillars for my mental/emotional/spiritual practice. And therapy. Really good therapy helps too!

When you visualize where you want to go in physical and mental terms, and travel terms, what does that look like?

My hope is that each day you wake excited about where you're headed, not dreadful of the daily elements in your plan.

It's a practice in perspective. We understand the importance of taking it one day at a time, for sure, but I feel it's also important to visualize and dream a little about the days/weeks/months and years ahead... It's still one day at a time as far as the fundamental elements are concerned, in other words, we're not trying to figure out all of the days ahead--we focus on one day and we narrow our focus to the elements needed to take extraordinary care...and when we visualize ahead, we broaden and get less detailed, allowing the focus to be limitless without the burden of figuring out how to make it all come together.

What we're doing each day contributes to it all coming together...so we have faith in what we're doing and how each day is contributing to our overall vision of tomorrow.

Your trek is incredibly inspiring. Fascinating.

Do we wake to feel excited about what we're doing and where we're going or do we wake dreadful of the elements we're doing each day? That's a really good question.

If we're starting each day dreadful of what we're doing, it's a great idea to change what we're doing. It all goes back to finding what works for us, not just in terms of what brings us results when we do it, but what fits our groove best. You can get awesome results by doing a lot of different things. The things you enjoy, the things that best fit your tastes and speed, those are the things that will help you find your groove.

I could lose weight eating in a totally different way, perhaps mostly salads--fresh veggies, and how about fresh juice? I could eliminate some of my favorites in favor of foods universally understood as awesome 'diet' foods. And I could kill myself for hours on end at the gym. None of that sounds very fun at all. I wouldn't wake each day excited about any of it. I would wake full of dread each day, hoping I could somehow make these new ways habit--then maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Once we find our groove, it's much easier to get excited about the future. What do we dare dream? Anything and everything, it's your dreams--it's limitless. There's no comparison to anyone else, there aren't any small dreams. Each and everyone is important. Visualizing a future where your success enables you to take less medicine, or none each day might be one. The day the doctor tells you he's taking you off certain medications because you don't need them anymore...yeah...imagine that! Visualizing a future where you finally try out rock climbing or anything else you've avoided because of physical limitations...Think about it--and get excited!!!

You're capable of anything you decide.

If you're discouraged and struggling, it isn't a sign of impending failure, it's a sign you haven't found what works well for you. You haven't found your groove. Don't throw in the towel. Redesign your approach. Change the plan into something you're excited about each morning.

We don't find our groove by way of force, we find our groove through a simplistic approach most agreeable with what we enjoy. Then, as we proceed and develop, we can evolve naturally into more detailed plans. Choosing change is a groove thing. You'll find it.

Mom and me, last night

August 22nd, 2019 ImChoosingChange.Com

August 22nd, 2019 ImChoosingChange.Com

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

My new website is up and running!! My new home on the web is www.imchoosingchange.com
I've "parked" that domain/address, undeveloped, for years. So, it's time for it to finally be active!
This site connects everything I do, from this daily blog to all my social media accounts, YouTube videos, Transformation Planet Podcast, group and one on one coaching/mentoring services, speaking engagement bookings, a secure store where you can purchase wristbands and books, plus loads of pictures, and more! In the coming months, we'll be adding an exclusive "members only" section that will include additional and exclusive content, including workshops, videos, expert interviews, and more!

Big thanks to Michael Funaro in Las Vegas for his amazing design work on the site! Michael is a web designer--and one in very high demand, too! I was very lucky to have his expertise on the design. It helps to know people in the business! I first met Michael online, years ago, via this blog. Then met him in person back in the fall of 2014. Michael is actually a member of the support group I facilitate. It helps to have a web designer who "gets me," and Michael certainly does! Michael has dropped over 200 pounds with his daily practice and continues to work it each brand new day--all the while inspiring and supporting others in profound ways. I look forward to interviewing Michael someday soon for an episode of Transformation Planet. That'll be a great opportunity for you to get to know him better!

I combined exercise with grocery shopping this evening. I opted to leave the car parked--and took off walking and grooving to my favorite tunes all the way to the store and back, taking the long way around, to and from, in order to get a good walk on the books. I followed that with a fantastic Thursday group call and a dinner where I prepared something new and different--and it was fantastic!

I'm hitting the pillow tonight with the positive energy that comes from completing a good "I'm choosing change" kind of day!

I'm full of gratitude tonight. I had good phone conversations with both of my daughters and one with mom, too. My heart is warm and fuzzy as I drift off to sleep. Okay--until next time!

I hope you check out the new website!

August 21st, 2019 Cheerleader Or Bully

August 21st, 2019 Cheerleader Or Bully

Yesterday and Monday were 4-star days: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I'm excited about my new website! I'll introduce you to it tomorrow! The new site has everything in one place, including this blog. I'll still keep my blog updated here and of course, the archives will remain here, too. I can't wait to show you around the new place!

"This is taking forever, I don't know if I have the patience." I've heard that many times. I recognize it right away because I've said something to that effect on many occasions.

I had a really negative and non-supportive habit of looking for my peace, calm, and thrills, basically, in that number on a scale. I chased it wildly. What I realize now is how my expectation of the scale providing these things, sent me in a diet mentality frenzy to manipulate the scale-- what can I do to get that positive affirmation from the scale??? I contemplated all sorts of things-- should I fast? Should I kill myself in the gym, or walk ten miles a day??

Changing the focus from the scale to the integrity of my daily plan boundaries was a life changer. I started writing about this dynamic I referred to as "confident patience" back in 2009.

Here's the thing: Confident patience only works with an honest commitment to the boundaries of our plan practice. And before then, it's important to make sure the plan is doable. Is this sustainable indefinitely?  Once we find our plan--the one we can do, the boundaries that are livable in the real world of our lives--then, we keep it--and we take care of it, we protect it. It will evolve naturally in a positive direction if it's designed specifically; uniquely for us.

If we create the structure of the plan practice and give it enough pillars of support--and we give the integrity of that plan practice self-honesty and commitment--then we can hit the pillow each night, knowing we made it another day--knowing that we've done all we can do--and then we can feel a real sense of peace, calm, and stability. I'm confident I maintained my plan today. And if I'm doing that--if you're doing that--then suddenly, time doesn't matter.

Let time do what it does. This isn't a race. The scale will do what it does. Let it. And realize, it's a data point, not a cheerleader or bully.

If we're confident in the integrity of our plan and we're still not getting positive progress, a personal plan evaluation is a good idea. Often times a few tweaks can make all the difference.

Now--on the other hand--beware of this: I can remember many times complaining about my plan "not working," but in reality, I wasn't working. Many times I couldn't honestly say I was taking extraordinary care of my plan--I was fudging it all the way--then laying the blame on anything and everything I could--except me!

There is a place of confident patience. Confidence in our plan, patience for where it's leading us.

The first time I wrote about this confident patience dynamic, philosophy, or whatever we want to call it, was over a decade ago. Let's hop in the DDWL time machine!

From the archives ten years ago in 2009:
My last official weigh day I checked in at 349, the “Lose To Win” final weigh-in I was 347, and today the scales showed 341. A loss of 8 pounds in the last two weeks! It's not the 339 I was hoping for, but the next weigh day I'll hit it for sure! I've lost a total of 164 pounds so far! I love it!

“Not the 339 I was hoping for,” really? Did I really expect a ten-pound drop? How silly of me.

What I've learned along the way is this: A confident patience is needed every day. When you're doing the things you know are right and good and you lay your head on the pillow at night knowing that your calorie budget is solid and your exercise is good, confident patience can come over you. It's calming. It's re-assuring. That confident patience says “I'm doing what's right and I'll get to where I'm headed along this road. However long it takes isn't of concern really because I know that I'm doing right by this every day.”

Time hopping to sometime in 2010:
The ups and downs, the fluctuations, the tough days and struggles---they come and go, but the confident patience remains strong. I really wanted to be in the 330's a year ago---and here I am getting ready to dive into the 240's. Confident patience. Forgetting about time and just doing what's right today. One day at a time adds up real quick. Confident patience.

I remain open to learning each day--and I stay humble because I believe successful/continued recovery in maintenance mode or going back the other way, are "places" with the biggest difference in consequences separated by the smallest of choices.

My new website is coming this week! Yay!
