September 21st, 2019 A Tough Little Exercise

The past couple of days have been 4-star days: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal one day and met it yesterday, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I've been in a real slump with my exercise schedule lately. I've learned how if I look at this from a negative perspective it likely won't improve. If I spend too much time on the benefits I'm missing out on, it'll create negative head chatter in the vein of "shoulda, coulda, woulda." Phrases that start with "I should be..." "I could be..." "I would have..." "I need to be..." are all fertile ground for negative head chatter to grow. I'm a firm believer in how everything we do serves us in some way. Instead of focusing on what I don't have or what I'm not giving myself, I first need to look at what this lack of structure in my exercise schedule gives me. How does it benefit me?

My inconsistency with an exercise schedule gives me flexibility. It gives me opportunities to get more rest. It gives me freedom to focus on other things. Well, this is a tough little exercise in perspective!! I'm having a difficult time coming up with benefits!! If I'm 100% honest with myself, the biggest benefit is: It enables me to continue patterns of time management that ultimately are not supportive for consistency. That's an honest bottom line. In eleven years, I've discovered that simply saying: "I'm going to do X from now on" doesn't work unless I back up and look at what I can do in support of that declaration. If I don't create the structure needed to honor the declaration, the declaration itself becomes fertile ground for negative energy.

Declaring the desired destination without a plan to get there will always arrive at an unintended destination, preceded by a lot of frustration, starts and stops, and doing the same things over and over again, expecting a different result. Insanity! 

When I work with people in developing their daily practice, the most important question isn't "what are you going to do?" The most important question is, "what intentional actions are you willing to do in support of this?"

I'm perfectly imperfect. I'm just as human as the next person. I compartmentalize certain areas and set priority levels that are truly non-negotiable for some things and not for others. It's just what is. I compartmentalize and detach from things that ultimately challenge my overall growth, like a champ!! My longtime mentor, Gerri Helms, recently reminded me: "Ow" is in the middle of "growth." Isn't that the truth!

What do I want and what am I willing to do to get what I desire? My answers to those questions aren't measured--and haven't been measured by what I say, write, or declare in this very personal diary. The answers are always found in what I've done and what I do now.

Stay tuned and we'll find out together. ("stay tuned," that's the broadcaster in me).

Today includes a three-hour broadcast from a car dealership and tonight I'm emceeing and dj'ing a fall festival for a local Catholic church/school. It'll be a good day!

September 19th, 2019 Daily Musts

The past couple of days have been 4-star days: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

My morning foundational routine is complete, my food is planned for today, and I'm poised for a good Thursday. I was recently asked specifically about the details of this foundational routine that starts each day. For me, it has become the single most important part of my daily practice.

It starts with prayer, followed by mindful meditation, followed by two different positive visualizations: One of this day ahead of me. Another long-term positive visualization. Then, I acknowledge and say aloud a few positive affirmations. I finish with my gratitude list. Not the whole thing! But several things I’m grateful for on this day. The entire process can be anywhere from ten-minutes and some days upwards of fifteen to twenty minutes. 

The first thing is admitting I don’t “got this” and humbly asking for guidance and help in making it through another day. Visualizing the day at hand includes considering potential obstacles and also considering intentional actions that will help me stay connected with my practice- like reaching out for support if needed... food plan strategy... I’ll even visualize grocery trips during that period... I like to do this routine with my eyes closed. Otherwise, I get distracted too easily. The meditation part acts like a slate clearing for the rest of the routine. It’s a very simple breathing focused mind-clearing thing. Breathe in, breathe out, again and again--it's an intentional calming.

I didn't really have a set morning foundational routine prior to what I refer to as my "turnaround" from relapse/regain. It’s evolved over the last five and a half years to become one of my daily musts. Like most everything along this road, it's an ever-evolving thing.

Yesterday was a 5-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, I enjoyed a great cardio session at the RecPlex, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I sincerely appreciate the tremendous outpouring of support for my eleven year anniversary! I'm full of gratitude for the beautiful things this blog has created for me--and the connections with incredible people are at the top of that list.

Keep on keeping on, that's the thing. Eleven years, woohoo! Okay, daily practice, here we are. I've learned how it's not about how long we've been at it, it's always about what we're doing today. It's not what we know, it's what we do.

I'm still enjoying the positive energy from Saturday night's reunion. It was a real blessing. I'm so glad I made it important to attend. I'm really glad my schedule allowed! A lot of people couldn't make it work in their schedule. For those, it'll happen again in five years!

Last night's trip to the RecPlex was a good one. I'm looking forward to more this week. After last week's brutal schedule, it'll be a welcomed change.

My foundational routine is complete, my food is planned for today, and coffee is in me! I'm as ready as can be for a Tuesday! Have an amazing one!

September 15th, 2019 Eleven Year Anniversary of This Blog

Yesterday was a 4-star day: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

Today's a special day for me. This entire transformational experience started eleven years ago tonight with my Day 1 post. You can read that Day 1 post by clicking here. It's hard to believe it's been eleven years. Time moves so quickly! I'll reflect a little more on this special anniversary in a few minutes, but first...

The 30th high school reunion of Stillwater High was an amazing experience last night. My goals were accomplished. I wanted to have meaningful conversations with familiar faces--asking open-ended questions and simply listening and learning about people who were part of my life during those transformative years of my youth. I love people. There were some great people there last night! Chris Holt, Mike Van Pelt, and Rob Lorenzo were all there...the "cool name" guys I mentioned at the beginning of chapter three in my book. Mike told me that Chris had found their mention in the book and sent him a picture of it...he got a kick out of that, adding..."I didn't think my name was that great." Without going too deep here (which you know I love to do), it certainly revealed the fascinating dynamics of individual perspectives and the influence our unique personal filters have on those perspectives. Don Miguel Ruiz's 2nd agreement...yeah, very true; another example.

I don't talk about myself too much or what I do in these special kinds of social situations. But I certainly will answer questions in the course of the conversations. One question, in particular, was really good: "If you were still 500 pounds, would you be here tonight?" Not a chance. And that's sad, really, but honest. Here's the thing: If I had experienced all of the non-weight related mental/emotional transformational things without this eleven-year physical transformation experience, then maybe I would have attended at 500 pounds. The physical transformation created (and continues to create) the opportunity for me to explore the perspectives and truths that go beyond the physical and straight into the most important areas of identity and self-worth. In that order of happening, I likely wouldn't have considered any other way of thinking and that would have kept me isolated from engaging in and experiencing special moments and events of life. And to be super honest, it's a lot of fun to receive positive feedback. Of course, it is! I'm human--and although 99% of my positive affirmations must come from within, the compliments do provide "material" for me to use in creating those positive affirmations each and every morning.

Eleven years. My goodness, I hadn't a clue on Day 1 where this would lead and what might become of it all. I had a vision, dreams, goals, hopes--but I don't think I had an inkling of what was ahead of me. The most important things along this road turned out to be (and continues to be) the non-physical things. It's about living. It's about the pursuit of mental and emotional freedom. The physical transformation brings a bunch of benefits, for certain, but those truly become a good foundation for the deeper and more meaningful things along this road. The "I'm Choosing Change Before Change Chooses Me" mantra isn't exclusive to weight loss. It's about choosing things supportive of a better, more meaningful life all the way around.

What do I want to do? I want to write another book, I want to further develop the motivational speaking career I started several years ago, I want to continue being a source of encouragement for others by way of direct communications and indirect communication via the many forms of media technology provides. Above all, I want to continue this daily practice of intentional actions that help keep me well. I want to further evolve this practice.

I didn't want to mark this anniversary with a highlight reel of sorts. There have been many highlights, certainly. However, the most transformative and important points of learning along the way came when everything spiraled into chaos. This truth flipped my perspective on struggling. Looking back on my many periods of struggle, it's clear: The most profound periods of growth come from that "dirty" soil. I'm never immune to struggle--those will always surface throughout the course of life. If I pick up those struggles with an open and honest mind and truly learn from the experiences, I can grow in a positive direction. If I choose to pick them up and use them as a club to beat myself down, I'm guaranteeing moves in a negative direction.

I feel like a "then and now" picture is certainly appropriate for a post like this, so here's one. From before this eleven-year practice side by side with one from last month. These type of side by side pictures are fun, certainly, but they're superficial--of course! The good stuff; the deeper stuff, is much better.

September 14th, 2019 So Many Ways

The past two days have been 5-star days: I maintained the integrity of my calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I exceeded my daily water goal, long 12-hour workdays make for plenty of natural exercise, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

I'm so relieved it's Saturday. My goodness, this past week was a monster for me. Super-long days, extremely active--constantly go go go. But- I made it through very well. I'm grateful! Sleeping in this morning was glorious. I slept a full nine and a half hours. That hasn't happened in a very long time!

My Aunt Connie and Aunt Margaret came to town yesterday. They picked up mom for a nice outing! It was a surprise to her. Perfect timing, too--as they showed up, mom was just finishing up with the hairstylist! I met them at the restaurant for a fast visit in the middle of my workday. I really appreciated them for coming and spending time with mom. It lifts her spirits in so many ways!

I don't have any broadcasting responsibilities today aside from a very small set of things I need to accomplish at the studio--but that will be fast and easy. Today is all about getting ready for a wonderful evening with junior high and high school classmates at our 30th reunion! It was such a wonderful experience at the 25th--and this one is poised to be even better. I'm a huge fan of 80's music (aren't we all?) and one of our classmates has a band that'll be playing a setlist full of 80's hits!

My morning foundational routine is complete. My food plan is set for today and I'm ready for a great Saturday! The event tonight is called "Cocktails and Cookies" on the OSU student union terrace. It's not a meal, so I'll make sure I have a meal going in--and some backup food options in my man-bag. My plan is to drink plenty of water and focus on making meaningful and enjoyable connections tonight.
