October 15th, 2014 Weigh Day Edition

October 15th, 2014 Weigh Day Edition

I was really concerned about today's weigh day. Not in a "oh no--I might not see the number I want" kind of way--rather, in a self-honest "I know I wasn't necessarily giving it my best" kind of way. I've dined out too much, I constantly choose to struggle with getting enough water, I choose to not get enough sleep and my workouts have been less intense overall during the last three week period. I didn't see the pool once during this previous three weeks. I attended two, maybe three spin classes total--I think it is two. The majority of my workouts have been walking and elliptical, but mostly walking--and some of those walks could be classified as leisurely strolls. I'm not mentioning these things in an effort to criticize--I'm simply pointing out the extreme imperfection of it all, and that's a good thing. It doesn't need to be perfect, it only needs to be consistent and relentless.

What have I been doing well? I haven't strayed to the dark corners of a binge in more than six months. I credit my abstinence from sugar and my accountability measures for this binge free 1/2 a year! I'm staying connected very well via this blog, my Twitter feed and Facebook page. And I'm keeping my progress in perspective. I'm not looking for a loss to make me happy. I'm already happy. I'm maintaining a critical level of importance in my recovery. It isn't something I'll sacrifice.

The other things--the "things I need to improve" will or they won't, depending on the importance level I assign to each.

I was absolutely thrilled to step on the scale today and find this:

8 more pounds gone! I've lost 97 pounds in the previous 25 weeks. I must say-- when someone asks me what I eat, I love sending them to the Twitter feed for "every bite-everyday." Live tweeting this recovery from regain has been a decision I'm very proud I made.

It was a very busy day! I'm preparing for a trip to Las Vegas tomorrow evening. It'll be a short trip, but fun and interesting none the less. I didn't get to do all I wanted today, but I was able to get done what I needed to get done work wise and otherwise, in order for me to have a less stressful departure day. Tomorrow night's blog will be coming from Las Vegas. I'm looking forward to sharing the experience in these pages.

Thank you for reading and your support,

  2. Hi Sean, and sorry for the lack of comments the last few weeks. Even though I haven't been commenting, I still check your blog almost every night. Congrats on the great weigh-in. Welcome to the 200s! I guess it just goes to show that food is the #1 factor in weight loss. Hope you have a wonderful time in Vegas.

    1. Katrin, it is possible--absolutely!! Thank you. I'm VERY proud of the binge free six months. It is the most amazing thing to go from how I felt in the darkest times--like I was trapped--to where I find myself today. It's a beautiful thing. I know you can get here, too, Katrin--It starts with self-forgiveness for the regain...and a healthy dose of self-compassion moving forward. Thank you for your wonderful support!

  9. Congratulations! I also struggle with drinking enough water. I'm trying to up my intake by keeping water with me at all times. Then I drink anytime I think of water, see water, or see someone else drink something. It's helping.

  10. Thanks for your motivating blogs Sean! I am working on taking off
re-gained pounds for the fourth time. You are my inspiration for knowing I can do this and it will be permanent! Did digging to try to find the roots and triggers of my wt. gains but never hit on how important consistency is in all of this. Also to make the chosen food program running in the background of my life.
Also appreciate not only "hearing" what you are eating, but "seeing' pictures of what gourmet dishes you put together is important. Thanks again.

  12. Great job on the consistency and acceptance of imperfection! Thank you for mentioning the length of time you've been binge free. It reminded me that I've been 4 months binge free myself! And prior to that particular (and very small binge compared to what I was doing just a year ago), I had nearly 5 months binge free! These, and your 6 months binge free, are great accomplishments! I tend to not give myself credit for my accomplishments, so your recognizing your accomplishment reminded me to recognize mine. Thanks!

    1. Congrats on 4 months!!! This is a BIG deal. We must recognize our accomplishments along the way. It's interesting--one slip, and we're sometimes compelled to beat ourselves up--but a big accomplishment and we occasionally gloss over it. We should be more kind to ourselves!! We're doing amazing things!!!

  13. Wow! Impressive loss, Sean! Rock star status right there! :)

Oh how often do you weigh in? Once a week??

    ReplyDelete

    1. Rosie--thank you! Awe... I feel like a rock star when I'm lip syncing to Queen on the elliptical!! Other than that--not so much!! You're so awesome, Rosie. Thank you. I weigh once every three weeks. I make a trip to the doctors office and do it there--I do not own a scale at home. If I did, I would likely weigh too often and that could create unnecessary frustration! The less frustration along this road, the better!! Every three weeks has been very good for me. I highly recommend it!!

  14. Way to go, Sean! I just want to say that your humility is very inspiring. I've been reading your blog almost since the beginning and was dismayed when you gained some of the weight back. But your perseverance and your change in attitude is making me get up & cheer for all of your success. I love love love your food pics. You do so many things right & you seem so happy. Yay for you & congrats on the great weight loss!

    1. Mary, thank you very much for over 5 years of readership and support!
I must say, looking back, the regain and struggles were needed for me to gain a different and powerful perspective. I needed humbled and I was, quickly.
The epiphanies I've experienced since the turnaround have hit hard and deep. The positive effects have made a profound difference in me in so many ways.
Thank you for cheering me on! And I'm happy you enjoy the good pics!
      Mary, thank you again!

  17. Oh my, Nikki, I feel like a new man! Together with all of the other changes this turnaround has included, I can't say I've ever felt better.
I will stay the course! Thank you again for your support!
You rocked Thanksgiving! Your post answered the question I had about what is traditionally served at a Canadian Thanksgiving feast! I wondered if it was similar to ours.

    1. Traditionally, food-wise it is actually similar: Turkey and/or ham plus all the fixins, except for some regional and ethnic dishes. My family has changed the menu towards more healthy choices: roast veggies instead of potato casseroles; apple pie instead of pecan a.k.a. devil pie!
