March 11th, 2020 Vulnerable

March 11th, 2020 Vulnerable

Since our last edition: I've maintained the integrity of my food plan boundaries, I've remained refined sugar-free, I've met or exceeded my daily water goal, I've enjoyed some good walks of late and a nice elliptical workout, and I've stayed well connected with exceptional support.

The call came this afternoon. I had a sick feeling in my stomach as I let the information settle. The CDC has ordered all nursing homes in the United States to ban all family visits until further notice. This is a protective measure for our most vulnerable--so it's a good thing, but still--disconcerting, to say the least. I was not looking forward to having this talk with mom tonight.

She took it very well. At least she did tonight--as this carries on, it'll be more challenging. Her sense of humor came through too when she suggested I could hang outside her window so "I can at least see you!" I reassured her how we would stay closely connected each day via phone and we would make it through this.

I've been doing my best to reject thoughts of her getting the virus--and because of the ban on visits, never seeing her again. That's a heartbreaking thought--but my mind went there. I think it was that thought that created the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach upon hearing the news of this latest development. Families and even hospice workers are not allowed inside--however, nursing staff and support workers will still be coming and going, so it's not a 100% quarantine type situation. The virus could still make its way inside. Anyway--it's scary, certainly.

For those of us who are relatively healthy, we could get it and make it through it. But for the exceptionally vulnerable, that isn't the case.

In the meantime, the prayers in my morning foundational routine will certainly reflect the latest developments. As far as my daily plan practice, it is time to be extra diligent in my self-care. I'll stay connected with support even more and I'll make sure to do the mental/emotional/spiritual work each and every day.

I've been on somewhat of a roll lately when it comes to trying new and different foods. Jack fruit, purple sweet potatoes, plantains, and tonight: Taro root--or simply, "taro" (as it's listed in MyFitnesspal).  I diced the taro into cubes and boiled it like potatoes--then mashed it with a couple tablespoons half and half. It was better than potatoes. Creamier and tastier. I made the mistake of assuming a low-calorie count. Nope! It's a calorie-dense root vegetable, for sure! 268g checked in at 300 calories! I weighed it pre-cooked--prepared it--then plated it before entering it in MFP. lesson learned: Don't assume! Just because something is an exotic veggie doesn't mean it's low cal! It was surprisingly delicious. I'll be looking for it again very soon.

Thank you for reading my blog. Any positive thoughts and powerful prayers you can afford for my mom and others affected by this virus are much appreciated.
