September 1st, 2016 Truly Scared

September 1st, 2016 Truly Scared

It was to be a routine gallbladder removal surgery for mom. Today was the day. Originally scheduled for 10:30am, some delays pushed it to 1:45pm. I made the trip this morning and spent some good time with her before she headed into surgery. Other family members would be there when she was done, and I had things I had to get done back home, so I left.

My phone rang less than three hours later. The first words said to me: "Stay calm, and listen..." Mom was having serious complications and had been put in ICU. She couldn't breathe well and her vitals were suggesting  horrible things.

After ruling out a few other things, a blood clot in the lungs was the likely culprit. By this time, Mom was on a ventilator and heavily sedated. Amber and I arrived at the ICU just as they were conducting a CT scan. The results came back negative. No blood clot!

The likely reason for the complications: Mild heart failure. The plan is to gradually take her off the ventilator starting sometime early to mid-morning. Until then, she's out. In fact, she'll likely not remember anything since before the surgery.

I was truly scared tonight.

And there's so much more I will write about this, later-- the emotions, the thoughts--I just don't have time tonight. It's super late.

What I can tell you is this-- I maintained the integrity of my maintenance calorie budget, I remained abstinent from refined sugar, I exceeded my daily water goal and I stayed connected with great support.

Speaking of great support--a sincere thank you to those sending best wishes, concern, and prayers.

  3. That is very scary. I hope she is ok and that you get good news soon. Amazed and proud of you that you didn't binge (which of course wouldn't have helped you or your mum). Stay strong.
